Count Your Parts

It’s that time of year, when we start putting routines together for our gymnasts. Today we are going to construct a Level 8 Beam and bar routine. I selected this level, since the counting of value parts is crucial at this level. Here is the routine:

Jump on Mount   A
Flic flac stop flic flac  B  +  0 (Missing Flight Series)
Split leap wolf jump A  +  A  (Fulfills leap series requirement)
Cat leap ½ stop cat leap ½ B  +  0
Full turn

(Meets the requirement)

Round off back tuck dismount B  +  A (Meets the requirement)

Missing Flight Series (.50), Missing 1 “B” skill (.30)                     Start Value 9.20

What you must remember in putting routines together is that skills must “enter” or “exit” DIFFERENTLY.  Yes, each value part can be rewarded twice, but they must enter or exit a series differently. Because she stops between the back springs and cat leap ½ both skills enter and exit the series the SAME way.  That is why the second back spring and cat leap ½ cannot receive credit. Also, the wolf jump has been devalued to an “A” skill. If the gymnast had completed a tuck jump directly connected to the second back spring it would have exited differently and the “B” would have been rewarded. For this reason, you need to have back-up skills in the routine so that all value parts receive credit. Here is a Level 8 bar routine:

1 Glide kip A
2 Clear hip B (Meets the “B” 367 Requirement)
3 Glide kip A
4 Squat-on A
5 Long hang kip A
6 Cast handstand B (Must be completed within 20 degrees for “B” credit)
7 Giant B
8 Straddle back B (Meets bar change and flight skill)
9 Glide kip 0 (3rd time doing a skill)
10 Squat on 0 (Enters kip/exits long hang kip)
11 Long hang kip 0 (Enters squat on/exits cast handstand)
12 Cast handstand 0 (Enters long hang kip/exits giant)
13 Giant B (enters same/exits DIFFERENTLY receives credit)
14 Tuck flyaway A (Meets the “A” dismount requirement)

10.0 Start Value         5- “A’s”                      5- “B’s”          4- “0’s”
